In my years of experience publishing books and articles, producing films and creating assessment scales on suicide, what has fascinated me the most is the consistent finding of the role of the destructive inner voice in suicide. For Lent this year, one of my commitments has been to join a book study at church on two of Henri Nouwen's books, Life of the Beloved and The Inner Voice of Love. We are called to enter into dialogue, not with the inner voice of perfectionism, but with the inner voice of Love: God who dwells in our hearts. We all are created out of love and we all are created to love. But in those times your inner voice will tell you its a good influence! Nobody's ever going to love you.
